Itchen-Navigation-1Between 2007 and 2013 a partnership of organisation s worked secure the future of the Itchen Navigation, a major channel of the Itchen System. The Navigation is part of the Itchen SAC, designated for its characteristic chalk stream flora and fauna.

WLW Ltd tendered for, and was successful in attaining the position of Principle Contractor on this CDM notifiable project. WLW designed enhancement works and managed delivery on 19 reaches creating many kilometers of new marginal habitats, improving footpaths and access, lowering two impoundments and reconstructing embankments to secure their longevity into the future.

The Navigation runs for over 12kms alongside of which runs a public footpath offering unparalleled access to a chalk stream environment. Securing and enhancing the Navigation for recreation e.g. walking, bird watching, dog exercising etc. was a key objective in this Heritage Lottery Funded Project.

WLW worked closely with the HWT Project Manager throughout the project which exceeded its original objectives for the extent of the enhancement works. This was partly due to additional funding being available but also by delivering much of the work at significantly less than the original budget forecast.

There was a significant contribution to the project by volunteers, many of whom are now members of the Friends of the Itchen Navigation. WLW assisted in many of the volunteering aspects by designing tasks, providing training, overseeing volunteer activities and by attending meetings and presentations.

This project has received extensive media coverage (including a feature on BBC 1’s Countryfile) and has been widely acclaimed. The project has been particularly praised for the number of people engaged through volunteering and arts projects. Aquascience Ltd is proud to have worked closely with and maintained excellent relations with the Project Manager and Partners.
